The Okinawa people of Japan are the longest lived, healthiest people on the planet.

In the same way my finance friends take their advice from people that are doing well financially, I take my health advice from those that are LIVING well.

Here is one thing the Okinawans don’t do…they never eat until they’re full, they eat until they’re no longer hungry.

Scale back on the quantity of food on your plate, and add some quality years to your life.

Sprinkle in an antioxidant rich plant diet, daily walks, gardening, and a little Tai Chi, and you have yourself the recipe to a happy, vital, and abundant life.

Your Tribe is Calling. Pick up.

August 1, 2017
your tribe is calling

Ever since I was little I absolutely loved connecting with others. When I was three I remember seeing a group of girl scouts sitting in a circle at the beach. I immediately ran towards the circle and plopped myself down to join them. Instant Tribe. No hesitation, no divide, no fear, no judgement, no bias. Their energy drew me towards them; it was that simple. I saw magic everywhere I went.

There are no seven wonders in the eye of a child. There are seven million. – Walt Streightiff

As tiny tots we never experienced loneliness. We were too busy with the magical present! What a gift 😉 Sadly, so many adults feel lonely, and it is because we are not built to live isolated lives. By nature we are tribal. It’s normal for us to crave intimacy and a sense of belonging; and it’s also the key to a healthy and happy life! There are numerous scientific studies that have proven that loneliness is a greater risk to your health than smoking and obesity. Loneliness has become an invisible epidemic. The good news is, finding our tribe is one sure way to end it.

That sense of belonging can do more for you than any diet or vitamin ever will.

It is when we are left feeling lost, alone, and spiritually disconnected, that we begin to search for something outside of ourselves. We all want to belong to something bigger than us. Eventually we begin to gravitate towards those that bring us joy, that are like minded, that lift our spirits, and make us feel unconditionally loved and grounded. We know deep down they are out there; our beloved tribe.

Only when we are deeply connected with ourselves, can we genuinely connect with others.

You will be a part of many different tribes throughout your life, and that is a beautiful thing 😉 For as your life changes, so will your inner circle. We are constantly growing and changing and so are those around you. The goal is to continue to grow! And the formula for finding your tribe is quite simple; spend time with those that bring you complete and utter joy, and accept you unconditionally, just the way you are.

Here are a few tips to help you on your journey towards finding or expanding your tribe.

5 Fuddhist Tribal Calling Tips 😉

#1 Embrace the desire to find your tribe and set that intention! Say it out loud, write it on a piece of paper, sing it, dance it, and put it out into the universe!

#2 Remember that you are connected to everyone around you, even those you’ve parted ways with. You will never attract your tribe if you are still begrudgingly holding onto negative feelings about those that formed part of your tribe in the past. Thank them for being part of your life and now focus forward on your own journey.

#3 Spend time doing things that light you up, and make you smile. Focus on the things you love that nourish your soul. If you love to cook, take a fun class. If you love to go to improv shows (yours truly) go to them! Your tribe will be there 😉

#4 Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Sometimes the people we think we wouldn’t want anything to do with end up being part of our sacred tribe. Give others a chance to show up for you. Other people’s energetic realm will either bring you close or tear you apart. Let quantum physics do the work for you.

#5 Stay focused on YOU. You’ve heard it before, but I must repeat it: your vibe attracts your tribe. Sometimes the only block to finding your people, is you. Focus inward, and stay there. Happiness lives nestled within you.

You’re tribe is calling. Pick up!

Take a Break From the Buzz With a Digital Detox

April 10, 2017
digital detox

When’s the last time you truly felt calm and centered?

Was it lying in bed on a lazy Sunday morning? Cooking dinner with friends? Yoga class? Reading a book?

All of these situations have one thing in common: they’re unplugged.

When you’re “unplugged,” it means you’ve stepped away from the constant flow of digital information that surrounds us. Sure, you may not feel tugged and strained while you’re fielding emails, checking your phone, and snapping pics and vids left and right. But studies show that this constant connectedness does takes its toll on us both mentally and physically.

Exactly how is constantly being plugged in affecting us? Here are some of the indicators.

#1 Lost Sleep

Stare at your phone before bed? Who doesn’t? Unfortunately, this is exactly what you shouldn’t do if you want a good night’s rest. Studies show that the blue light emitted from phone and tablet screens restricts the release of melatonin, an essential hormone that helps us shut down for the night and get to sleep.

#2 Unproductivity

Yeah, that’s a word; it means we get less done! And it’s exactly what happens when we’re constantly checking social media and being sidetracked by texts, DMs, emails, gifs, and other digital distractions.

#3 Bad Posture

Can it get any worse? From sitting idly in front of a computer all day to that terrible, awkward neck-angle we adopt when scrolling through our phones, it turns out the digital onslaught can even mess up our posture.

What To Do?

We all know that nixing the digital world altogether isn’t an option. Social media is still a great way to stay connected with friends, relatives, and what’s going on in the world.

On a personal level, technology has allowed me to stay connected with my loved ones in Argentina and around the world. Without apps like Whatsapp and Skype, just sending a funny text or having a quick video chat with my family would be impossible, and I would feel so much further away than I actually am.

At the same time, I know that taking the occasional break from technology is healthy. “Checking out” every once in a while with a digital detox is an awesome way to free your mental bandwidth and allow yourself to focus on the things in life that truly matter. Your laptop isn’t the only one in need of a recharge and reboot …

4 Fuddhist Tips for Unplugging

The key to a digital detox is starting slow. Here are some great tips to start you off!

  • Dig out your old kitchen timer and set it for just one or two hours of screen-free relaxation.
  • Choose one specific time each day (or week!) to check social media, and stick to it.
  • Do leave home without it: Your phone, that is. Pop that sucker on the kitchen counter and drive off with friends for a fun adventure sans portable.
  • Make your bedroom an off-limits zone for phones. It will help you get to sleep and make for more relaxing mornings.

So what do you do to unplug? I’d love to hear your ideas – leave them in the comments below!

The Power of Wellness Travel

April 4, 2017
wellness travel

I finally put myself first and the result was life changing.

Our busy lives and hectic routines are anxiously keeping us all on auto-pilot. The overwhelming amount of to-do lists and constant worrying is taking a serious toll on our physical and mental well-being. As a result, being “plugged in” while running on “empty”, leaves us feeling depleted and uninspired. No matter how stressful things get, rarely do we take time to rest and recuperate. We come in dead last on that to-do list, and oftentimes we don’t even make the list.

It’s time to put yourself first.

And that’s exactly what I did when I pulled the trigger on a weekend escape that granted me the luxury of simply forgetting about everything and worrying about nothing. There is no better way to rejuvenate and recharge then to nourish your body and soul with a wellness getaway! Wellness travel doesn’t have to mean a full three days of yoga and meditation. The key is to work on parts of your personal health that you have been neglecting, and focus on the areas that you feel need the most love and attention.

Enter: Le Blanc Spa Resort!

This Five-Diamond gem, is one of the many wonderful Palace Resorts in Cancun, Mexico. Another Le Blanc is set to open in Cabo San Lucas this fall!

I have to admit, I usually don’t do all-inclusive resorts, but Le Blanc is 100% Fuddhist approved! The quality food, outstanding service, and sheer beauty of the surroundings all contribute to the seemingly magical energy of the resort. The moment you check in, the warm staff greet you with a glass of fresh coconut milk and deliciously crisp granny smith apples. You are then introduced to your butler.

Yes, everyone get’s a butler!

I must admit at first I felt a bit uncomfortable asking for things, but Roberto’s welcoming spirit helped me to quickly rid of those silly reservations. He was always cheerful and ready to serve! First of all, did I mention my room was already stocked with champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, and gourmet treats. What more could I ask for?! Well, I do recall having a strong craving for extra dark chocolate one night, and Roberto was more than happy to oblige. 🙂 The impeccable service doesn’t end with a charming butler.

Hold tight, the pampering is about to reach new heights!

Say hello to Le Blanc’s “Comfort Menu.”

Le Blanc offers in room aromatherapy, a variety of bath salts, and even an assortment of pillows to choose from!

Every morning, to help balance my body and mind, my room smelled of pure coconut and verbena oils. And, in the afternoons Roberto would change it to a revitalizing Australian eucalyptus and mint. At night I was gifted with the relaxing aroma of lavender leaves.

In addition to my personalized aromatherapy, every evening my tub was prepared with my preferred bath salt (lavender-vanilla). Next level spoiling. Gracias Roberto! As if I wasn’t relaxed enough, I had many a pillow options to choose from: orthopedic, lavender, chamomile, goose feather, and hypo-allergenic. You can’t really go wrong with any of these choices, but I’m a goose feather kind of girl 😉

Can I stay here forever?

Getaways where you come back with more cargo than you left with, are not for me. I like to keep it moving during my travels! I’ve never been a fan of a solo routine at the gym, because I get bored quite quickly. I believe keeping your body guessing, is the key to staying consistent with your workout. Thankfully, Le Blanc had a variety of fitness classes that kept me mega motivated and in shape during my stay!

That mini flan wasn’t going to burn itself off 😉

I signed up for aquatic spin, TRX, salsa, zumba, pilates, and wound things down with meditation and hatha yoga classes. Then came the post workout treat 😉 After sweating it out, I would lay out oceanside, soaking up the wonderful Mexican sun, at one of Le Blanc’s stunning infinity pools.

Ok ladies, let’s get right to it. The Spa. Wow.

First off, you’re drink of choice. They had everything from skin loving chlorophyll on tap, to my personal favorite, a mint beet infusion drink 😉 Mmmmm. And the beautifully serene relaxation area was always stocked with delectable dates and an assortment of fresh fruit and nuts to snack on.

Furthermore, the spa offers a cold/hot plunge hydrotherapy tub, music therapy sauna, and herbal steam room. There’s even a bucket of freshly cut cucumbers, as well as thermal lavender and eucalyptus water for you to spray on before entering the sauna. Most noteworthy, was the lavender rosemary mud mask and CHI deep conditioning treatment. Let’s just say my face was green, my hair was dripping in conditioner, I was sporting cucumber glasses, and I’ve never been happier.

The cherry on top of the self-care cake. My Kukulcan massage.

The Kukulcan massage is both a physical and spiritual cleansing ritual. This Mayan practice involves two masseuses who use four hands to simulate a choreographed movement of the sacred jaguar, snake, and eagle. The Mayans believed we were all born with an animal spirit, and each animal represents a different life energy. Especially relevant is the snake, who holds a healing power that represents transformational change. Their hands mimicked a snake motion for a portion of the massage, and it was unlike anything else I had ever experienced.

Prior to the massage, the masseuses had me burn a copal, a resin used from pre-Mesoamerica, to help cleanse the body and mind of negative energies and anything that may be holding us back. I then indulged in two blissful hours of complete abandonment.

It was the perfect ending to an unforgettably epic weekend.

The goal of any healthy-minded travel is to return home feeling revitalized, centered, and inspired to continue living a healthy life. These new experiences offer you a newly inspired perspective and allow you to see life with fresh eyes, shedding light on what truly matters. Restoring your mental and physical health is the greatest investment you can make. I grant you permission to pamper yourselves. You’re worth it.

There is no better way to serve others than by serving yourself first.

Vegan Caesar Salad

Vegan Caesar Salad

A refreshingly healthy take on the classic “Caesar Salad.” For years I’ve neglected the Caesar salad after learning about just how unhealthy my ‘old beloved’ really was. The super heavy dressing, flood of parmesan cheese, and not-so-calorie-friendly croutons tally up close to 800 calories! I decided it was time to bring back the mighty Caesar, with a healthy twist 😉 Say HOLA to my Vegan Caesar Salad! This salad is super simple to make and the avocado dressing delivers a delicious creamy texture while providing you with all of the nutritious benefits of the mighty ‘cado! Say buh-bye to the parm and hello to the “nooch” aka nutritional yeast, a wonderfully healthy substitute for cheese. Guilt-free and delicious!

10 Simple Tips to Help You Eat Healthy for LESS

October 18, 2016
tips to help you eat healthy on a budget

I hear it all the time. It’s too expensive to eat healthy! The reality is, it’s too expensive to be sick. Making your health a priority is the greatest investment you can make. It’s not necessary to buy everything organic, purchase an expensive juice cleanse, consume overpriced vitamins, or buy a $600 blender to stay healthy. It’s time to boost your health without hurting your wallet!

Here are a few simple tips that have helped me stay healthy while not breaking the bank 🙂

#1 Keep your fridge glistening!

The very first thing I clean in my home is my refrigerator. The amount of food that goes to waste from having a messy fridge is heartbreaking. The more organized your fridge is, the more you will save by not having to re buy the bunch of cilantro, bag of spinach, head of lettuce, and bundle of berries that went bad because they went unseen.Taking time to store things properly will prevent food waste, keep you healthy, and keep your wallet happy!

Fuddhist tips on food storage:
  • Store all greens in your veggie drawer
  • Make sure to store bananas away from other produce
  • Wrap celery in foil
  • Line veggie drawer with paper towels to absorb excess moisture
  • Throw an apple with your potatoes to prevent sprouting

Keep your fridge glistening

#2 Stay in the land of veggies

Grocery outings can easily turn into a Bed Bath and Beyond run, where you find yourself buying stuff you didn’t go there for. For example, under eye creams and mini vegan desserts (guilty). Stay in the land of the veggies and purchase what’s in season. Smile when you exit with your two bags for $30 instead of $80.

Fuddhist tip:

Never ever go grocery shopping hungry – you will end up buying packaged food, baked goods, and treats that will put a dent in your wallet and waistline.

#3 Embrace the coupon game

Don’t stress about meticulously cutting out every coupon and spending time organizing them. Instead of dreading that long grocery line, make sure to snag a copy of the coupon book which is always sitting at every register and leaf through it while you’re waiting, or while the grocer is ringing you up. I’m stoked when I find a match, and even when I don’t, by the time I’m done fishing for deals, my wait in line is over! Win-win.

Embrace the coupon game

#4 Learn to love those thighs

We have become obsessed with purchasing all white meat. We need healthy fats! Most vitamins are fat soluble which means that if you are spending a fortune on vitamins and not consuming healthy fats you are throwing your money away. Fat doesn’t make you fat, sugar makes you fat. Don’t be scared of the chicken thighs. Give them a try! Keep in mind, meats in general are the highest price on the ticket. It’s better to focus on high quality protein and scale back on the amount. Quinoa, lentils, and beans are some great alternatives. They are loaded with protein and a lot nicer to your wallet 😉

Learn to love thighs

#5 Buy the entire chicken

If your head just exploded at the idea of having to cut an entire chicken, you are not alone. What are we in the stone age?! I can tell you from experience that after I finally took a leap of faith and carved out some time to cut an entire chicken, I was officially hooked! You’ll save money and find yourself bragging to friends about your awesome chicken cutting skills. You can do it! Here’s how 😉

Fuddhist tip:

Save the backbone of the chicken, and use it to make a delicious stock. Here’s the simple recipe!

#6 Join a CSA

Eating locally and seasonally is the number one way to boost your health. Opt for receiving a box filled of wonderful fruits and veggies every month to cook with.  If you’re an omnivore, many CSAs are great resources for saving big on eggs and hormone-free, antibiotic-free meats. This will not only be more cost-effective than having to drive to the grocery store every few days to pick your veggies, but it will also expand your horizons and encourage you to try new recipes. Did you say locally sourced organic produce delivered to your doorstep? Yes, please.

Fuddhist tip:

Use Local Harvest to find all the CSA options near you.

box of fruits and veggies

#7 Visit your local farmers market!

This is a great way to save money, support your local farms, and boost your health, all while having a pleasant food shopping experience outdoors with the entire family. Find a farmer’s market near you! If you don’t have access to a farmer’s market, focus on buying produce that is in season. This is another great way to save and improve your health.

Fuddhist tip:

Consider visiting the farmers market at the end of the day to score some great deals.

Visit your local farmers market

#8 Shop for what’s on sale!

I don’t have a grocery list. Apart from a few staple items that I can’t live without (avocado, garlic, onions, tomatoes, grapefruits, spinach) I buy whatever is on sale and learn to love it! This makes my shopping time fun and it encourages me to try new recipes and work certain veggies into my meal planning.

Fuddhist tip:

For all my app lovers, download Grocery IQ and thank me later 😉 This wizard collects your desired items and finds any and all coupons to match!

Shop for what's on sale

Not everyone can afford to buy everything organic, so prioritizing is a must. Some fruits and veggies contain very high amounts of pesticide, so you want to make sure those items are always organic. I refer to the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen to check for the most updated list. The good news is there are a TON of fruits and veggies that don’t! For example, my adored avocado 😉 Don’t bother getting organic avocados, spend those extra dollars on “The Dirty Dozen” instead!

Fuddhist tip:

Here’s an updated list of the dirty dozen and clean fifteen! Make sure to check them annually.

the dirty dozen

#10 Be prepared and be enamored with cooking <3

Buying pre washed pre packaged food comes at a cost. Get accustomed to washing and storing your fruits and veggies. Taking the time to make your health a priority is always time well spent. Food prepping will also incentivize you to munch on more nutritious snacks. It’s vital that we get back in the kitchen and learn how to cook simple meals. Families that cook and eat together enjoy better health!

Fuddhist tip:

Meal planning can be tedious, but luckily there are tons of apps that will do the work for you. I love the Allrecipes Dinner Spinner. It’s a great app to help you meal plan and it’s free!!

A Tiramisu-Coffee Collaboration: The Energy-Boosting Creamy Tiramisu Smoothie

August 21, 2016
PALEO in heels Creamy Tiramisu Smoothie
There’s nothing quite like a foodie/fuddhist/fresh roast collabo.

As a strong supporter of all things organic, fair trade, and delicious, I stumbled across this incredible brand of coffee hailing from the UK called Shooters & Hill. The coffee I devoured comes from Magdalena, in the ‘Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta’ region of Colombia, home to 30,000 indigenous people. This small batch urban roaster delivers organic and fairly traded coffee, from a top of a hill in South East London, and for those lucky enough to live nearby I strongly recommend their full service pour over coffee experience!

As fate would have it, a creamy tiramisu smoothie that I had been drooling over, happened to use none other than Shooters & Hill coffee. The creator of this wonderful recipe is Zoë, aka, Paleo in Heels. I was inspired by her journey from sickness to health, could relate to her battle with chronic pain, and found it synchronistic that we both came from the wonderful world of television. Not to mention, I fell in love with every single recipe on her blog!

Say hello to my very first Fuddhist Collaboration!

A big thank you to Paleo in Heels and Shooters & Hill for delivering such quality, and for being generous enough to allow me to share it with all of you!

Creamy Tiramisu Recipe!
  • Two cups chilled organic strong black coffee*
  • One cup unsweetened almond milk
  • Two small frozen sliced bananas
  • One tbsp cacao powder
  • One scoop vanilla protein powder (I like to use Carnipro Paleo protein)
  • Two scoops Amazing Greens chocolate infusion (Replace with a large handful of spinach & extra cacao powder if you do not have this to hand)
  • One cup of chilled water to make this smoothie go a bit further
  • One tbsp ground flaxseed
  • Tbsp coconut oil
  • One scoop of chia seeds
  • Cacao nibs to sprinkle on top
  • Large handful of strawberries, fresh/frozen to make a Strawberry Tiramisu. Trust me! 🙂

PALEO in heels Creamy Tiramisu Smoothie
How to make chilled coffee…

*I make a big pot of coffee the night before by placing three scoops of ground coffee into a cafetiere, pour over hot water, leave to steep until cool and then plunge. Pour the coffee into a glass bottle and place into the refrigerator overnight for use in smoothies and iced coffee beverages for the next few days.

  1. Make your coffee as per instructions above.
  2. Place all ingredients apart from any ingredients you would like to sprinkle on as toppings into a high powered blender and blend until smooth.
  3. Pour into two glasses and enjoy.

This smoothie keeps well in the refrigerator to drink later on in the day as an afternoon ‘pick me up’ snack.

Toss your To-Do List and Create a Top Two List

August 8, 2016
Toss Your To-Do List And Create A Top Two List

The dreaded to-do list. Whether you write it out, add it to your notes app, create colored post its, or have it displayed on your kitchen fridge, one thing remains the same, it never gets done on time, and it leaves you feeling defeated.

It’s the never ending life goals queue; a written reminder of just how much you didn’t get done in 24 hours.

At the end of a long day, you are left feeling shitty, and you are not alone. Here are the lingering thoughts, “my day was unproductive”, “I didn’t get anything done today”, “I’m so behind”, “I’m not doing enough.” Desperation, hopelessness and exhaustion seep in, and you start the next day carrying the residual guilt from the day before. Your to-do list just got longer.

This is no way to live your life.

Let me help you actually be productive by encouraging you to TOSS your TO DO list and create a TOP TWO LIST!

I can already feel the anxiety beaming through the page. No! I need my to-do list! Who can remember all of the things I need to get done! Here’s the good news, I promise you you won’t forget to purchase groceries, and apart from having a recipe you want to try that requires specific ingredients, I assure you that whatever you have forgotten to purchase won’t leave you starving.

The goal here is not to ever write down reminders, it’s to stop laundry listing every single thing you feel needs to be done in one day and ONLY focus on the TWO MOST important things. When you shift your focus on the top two, miraculous things occur. You stop procrastinating what is truly important by occupying yourself with fluffy errands like grabbing a banana holder from Bed Bath. You also start the day with a laser focus on TWO things, and when those two things are completed, you are left feeling like you’ve accomplished something and with time to spare, freeing up time to get to the less essential errands.

We all feel a need to keep busy, stay busy, and do do do. As a good friend once asked me, “Marianela, what if there is nothing you have to do?” At first I had an explosive reaction, a conditioned one, of “WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?” Days, weeks, months went by, and the question stayed with me. After feeling burned out, exhausted, and completely defeated, I started to ask myself and others that same question. When I started to focus on only TWO things, it really helped me bring clarity to what’s truly important in my life.

What are your priorities? What are you life goals? I encourage you to write those out and then create your top two list with those answers in mind. If you are ready to hear this, here goes…the to-do list is a cunning way to avoid what you truly want to be doing with your life. It’s keeping your mind preoccupied with the trivial many, not the vital few, as Greg McKeown so masterfully stated in his book, Essentialism.

Celebrate your small wins, and start your day feeling good, and end your nights feeling even better.

A small sense of accomplishment goes a long way! These wins will boost your mood, fueling you with more drive and motivation to tackle tomorrow’s top two. This shift will catapult you into a more productive YOU!

Guilt-Free Nutella Treat!

July 28, 2016
guilt-free dessert saves waistline

In the world of health and wellness, sweets and treats are usually frowned upon. Well, what if I told you that this tempting recipe is not only 100% Fuddhist approved, but also courtesy of my beautiful body building sister, Natalia ♥ No one watches what they eat more than those competing on a consistent basis. My sister has always had a knack for all things sweet and that is how Natavisco Kitchen was born. She has worked tirelessly on reshaping and perfecting her trusted dessert recipes so that even those competing wouldn’t feel an ounce of guilt if they indulged every so often. Natalia uses quality ingredients and goes out of her way to create delicious delicacies that leave you feeling satiated and guilt free. There’s no one I’d trust more with my sweet tooth. Go ahead, take a bite and smile; your waistline is still in tact 🙂

A note from Natavisco Kitchen

*People who frequently cook meals at home eat healthier and consume fewer calories than those who cook less. Obesity is an escalating public health problem that contributes to other serious health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. The evidence shows people who cook at home eat a more healthy diet. Moving forward, it’s important to educate the public about the benefits of cooking at home, identify strategies that encourage and enable more cooking at home, and help everyone, regardless of how much they cook to make healthier choices.

From my kitchen to your belly! My ‘Guilt Free’ Nutella Tart!

  • 2 cups of gluten free oatmeal

The 5 Things You Need for a Picture Perfect Picnic

July 21, 2016
picture perfect picnic

Picnic outings are the absolute greatest! But if you aren’t prepared they can be stressful and far from dreamy. Here are a few Fuddhist tips to crafting a picture perfect picnic, just in time for National Picnic Month 🙂

1) Grade “A” Grass

Grade A grass

There’s nothing worse for a picnic than itchy, lumpy, uneven, damp grass. Don’t settle on your local park. It’s totally worth a drive to make sure you are feasting on some premium green! Take some time scouting your desired picnic spot. Treat yourself to some terrific turf.

Tip : Yelp “perfect picnic spot”, spend time looking through the gallery, then make your selection!

2) A Quality Quilt

urban mat from world market

The blanket selection is paramount! You want something with a little cushion or your picnic time will undoubtedly be cut short. There’s nothing cute about being massively uncomfortable. Make a solid investment once, and you’ll find yourself picnicking often! A quilted throw is perfect, but make sure it’s washable. My personal favorite is ‘The Bohemian Urban Mat’ from Cost Plus World Market 😉 Affordable and stylish!

Tip : If you go the reversible mat route, make sure you purchase a cushion to sit on. You can grab a super cute one for cheap at Marshalls!

3) Simply Delicious Finger Foods

Selecting the food items is the best part! These items depend entirely on who you will be picnicking with, so make sure to take into account their favorite snacks. In general, I like to pick food items that aren’t a nightmare to clean up, are super easy to snack on, and won’t get soggy in the sun. Make it easy on yourself by purchasing foods that are already packaged, it’s worth it!

Tip : Throw your ice pack in a ziploc bag to prevent it from getting the food wet.

The Fuddhist Picnic PicksFuddhist Picnic Picks

– 1 pint of organic blueberries/blackberries/raspberries
– 1 bag of organic baby carrots
– 1 pint of organic cherry tomatoes
– organic super sweet mini peppers
– organic garlic hummus
– organic trail mix with dark chocolate nibs 😉
– watermelon mint juice in a tightly sealed mason jar
– one large coconut water – (INVO and Harmless Harvest are two of my favorites)
– organic plums/green apples/grapes
– organic dried fruit (mangoes, figs, apricots)
– organic wine. Bonterra Cabernet at Trader Joe’s is a total steal! (don’t forget the bottle opener)

Don’t forget the paper towels! I also like to pack extra resealable bags, sunscreen, and some small trash bags. Keep the green clean!

4) A Baller Basket

picnic basket from

A good old fashion wooden picnic basket will last you a lifetime. No need to break the bank but make sure you find a quality “canasta” por favor. Head to for a ‘Downton Abbey-esque’ style basket, they have tons of options at affordable prices! You can also find a great collapsible insulated tote at Cost Plus World Market, if that’s more your style.

Tip : A fully loaded picnic basket is not for the weary. I always bring a small backpack to carry all my plates, paper towels, cutlery, cups, and organic wine in.

5) A Wooden Serving Platter for the Win!

serve platter from target

The Fuddhist’s Coco-Cado Caney Face Mask for Glowing Skin!

June 21, 2016
The Fuddhist’s Coco-Cado Caney Face Mask for Glowing Skin!
It’s my favorite recipe!

Instead of eating it, I slather it on my face. No facial comes close to the magic of Coco-Cado Caney Face Mask.

It begins with my favorite fruit of all time. AVOCADO. The Cado part of this recipe will nourish and hydrate your skin all while slowing down the aging process. Hello Monounsaturated fatty acids! The fab omega-3 fatty acid in avocados works to lock in moisture and keep your face glowing! This wonderful fruit is an antioxidant powerhouse (vitamin A, C, K, B6, E…fill in the blank) that naturally helps repair damaged skin. This is an edible no brainer!

Coconut Oil. I can’t begin to explain how in love I am with this ingredient. I use it for almost everything! Coconut oil is chock full of antioxidants that pump the brakes on free radical damage. It keeps your skin supple and elastic while stimulating collagen production. Buh bye wrinkles! It also helps protect you against harmful UV rays and works as a natural SPF! All the healthy acids in coconut oil provide your face with a love army of beauty protection. It’s strong antimicrobial/antiviral properties help kill acne causing bacteria and protect the skin from infections. Most people think, “oil on my face?! NOOO!” Rest easy my Fuddhies, coconut oil actually helps unclog blocked pores and remove dirt. This is the #1 way I get rid of blackheads!

Sugar Cane is a super sweet natural exfoliator 😉 It’s gentle and safe yet still super effective at scrubbing away dead skin cells paving the way for some seriously glowing skin! Cane sugar also contains glycolic acid, an alpha-hydroxyl acid that helps fight bacteria while keeping your skin bright and healthy. As if things could get any sweeter, cane sugar is also a natural humectant, helping keep moisture in, masterfully hydrating and conditioning your skin.

Ooooh HONEY child. Honey is incredibly hydrating and ironically also wonderful at exfoliating skin cells. Honey contains anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, as well as antiseptic properties. So long acne!
When used religiously, honey helps fade unsightly scars and blemishes. I can tell you from experience this has worked better than any expensive cream I’ve ever been prescribed by a dermatologist.

Lastly, a dash of fresh lemon juice! Lemon is a natural astringent, which helps tighten and shrink large pores.

Let’s go through the benefits of each of the ingredients for this miracle face mask:

Ingredient Skin Benefits
Avocado  Hydrates and moisturizes skin, repairs damaged skin, slows down the aging process, reduces the appearance of wrinkles
Honey Hydrates and exfoliates the skin, naturally antibacterial great for fighting acne, helps fade scars and blemishes
Coconut Oil antimicrobial and antifungal which helps fight acne, reduces free radical damage, stimulates collagen production
Sugar Cane improves sun damage, natural exfoliator and humectant, fights bacteria
Lemon  helps tighten pores, natural exfoliator, removes blackheads, moisturizes skin, fades age spots
  • ½ ripe avocado
  • 1 tbps of raw organic honey
  • 1 tbps of coconut oil
  • 1 tbps of organic cane sugar

  1. Mix above ingredients in a small bowl.
  2. Apply on a clean face and let sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Rinse off with cold water and save the extra’s! (You can refrigerate CoCo-Cado Caney for up to 2 days in the fridge)

Thy TEN Fuddhie Beauty Commandments

June 1, 2016
thy 10 beauty commandments

Without further ado, here are thy 10 Beauty Commandments, a divine dedication to honoring your best YOU.
Real beauty is loyalty to thyself.

#1 Thou shalt not put anything on one’s face or body that one wouldn’t put in thy belly.

This one’s quite simple, if I’m wearing it, I’m eating it! My kitchen and bathroom cabinets essentially hold the same items. I often run to the kitchen to apply my nightly face mask. Your skin is your largest organ and everything you put on it seeps into your bloodstream. So, unless you’re willing to drink sodium laurel sulfate or anything methyl, ethyl, butyl related, then put down the chemically ridden cream and pick up some coconut oil!

#2 Thou shalt make sleeping thy number one priority.

IF I CAN PEEP THE SUN, MY SLEEP IS DONE. Don’t be shy, sport that eye mask! There is nothing more beautifying than sacred shut eye. While you’re sleeping your body is repairing and renewing itself, as well as producing copious amounts of collagen, turning back the clock on aging! Nothing comes close to the restorative powers of sleep. A blissful night’s sleep will have you glowing the next day.

#3 Thou shalt NEVER leave your water unattended.

My glass water bottle is my baby. Hydration is everything. It plumps your face with that healthy glow, flushes toxins, helps hydrate your cells, and keeps cellulite and wrinkles at bay! Not to mention it is incredibly effective in helping you burn fat, build muscles, and boost brain power. There’s nothing sexier than a smarter you 😉

#4 Thou shalt savor sulfur rich foods religiously

Nothing pumps the brakes on aging like good ol’ methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) a.k.a. sulfur. If you want to take a dip in the fountain of youth, look no further than the queen beauty mineral, sulfur. MSM is a collagen building machine that will grant you a beautiful complexion as well as strong hair and nails. Eating foods rich in sulfur is critical for maintaining healthy vibrant skin. Here’s a list of a few sulfur rich foods that I eat daily:

  • coconut
  • garlic
  • onion
  • eggs
  • kale (in smoothies or salads)
  • avocado

#5 Thou shalt not shower without a scrub a dub dub.

Clarisonic is my rubber ducky! I have noticed incredible benefits from using it daily. The trick for me has been to wait until the end of my shower/bath when my pores are open to go in for the scrub. Make sure not to neglect the rest of your body as well. Body brushing stimulates your lymphatic system and softens those fat deposits, which in turn helps show those unpleasant toxins the door!

#6 Thou shalt love lemons.

LOVE LEMONS, LIVE LEMONS – My house is never void of lemons, they live in my bathroom, my kitchen, my bedroom and even my living room. The night before I go to sleep I cut a lemon in half, squeeze it into my glass bottle, fill it with Mountain Valley Spring Water, and leave it next to my bed. Upon rising I down the entire bottle and I’m instantly energized and feeling beautiful. This simple addition to your morning routine will give you a serious beauty boost both inside and out! #7 Thou shalt sweat it out any way you know how.

This is the best way to stimulate all your organs for detoxification! During exercise you are increasing blood flow, releasing those “feel good” hormones, getting rid of the waste, cranking up collagen production and oxygenating your skin. Oxygenated blood is what helps flood your body with nutrients, and plumping your face full of goodness. This is what gives you that radiant look. I like to switch it up weekly! Pilates, ballet, yoga, hiking, dance, salsa, and sometimes, a simple long walk.

#8 Thou shalt drink your facials.

The best facials are the one’s you liquefy. You need to nourish your body from the inside out. Your skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside your body- if you want beautiful skin, the secret is a beautiful gut! GO GREEN and flood your body with a tsunami of vitamins, enzymes, minerals, and oxygen; your newly radiant face will thank you! Click here for my go-to Breville Facial.

#9 Thou shalt love thy self UNCONDITIONALLY

Accept and love where you are. Always. There’s no way to get to a better you without loving the current you. Fiercely embrace your individuality! Remember the law of the universe, what you focus on expands. Focus on all that you love about yourself. Self doubt and beauty don’t mix. Feed your mind with beautifully healthy thoughts and watch the transformation occur!

#10 Thou shalt find pleasure in all that you do.

Being happy is beautiful. Happy people exude an energy that is far more attractive than someone who has spent a fortune on their face regime. Inner beauty is truly infectious! Focus on the beauty of that around you and watch how effortlessly you will attract that beauty onto yourself.

Good Mood = Good Food

May 9, 2016
Good Mood Good Food - The Fuddhist

As seen on Huffington Post

Nope. That never happens. No one’s running to steam broccoli at 2am after a terrible breakup. Although it’s true that you are what you eat, modern science has now proven that you’re also what you think and feel. These two philosophies are the backbone of my very own philosophy, Fuddhism!

What you eat, and how you think and feel, immensely influence your overall health and happiness.

Look, we’ve all been there…polishing off that pint of quadruple chocolate chip ice cream (that exists, right?) after a breakup, or housing a plate of nachos after your favorite Stark gets killed (Google Game of Thrones…please). Crappy moods lead to mindless eating, which lead to poor food choices, which undoubtedly lead to poor health. It’s a vicious cycle and it’s important to know that, your emotional state has a serious effect on your diet.

Want more proof? We can see it on the flip side after that hurts-so-good workout when endorphins are flying and you are feeling great! Your ‘runner’s high’ has cranked on those feel good chemicals, and in this euphoric state you don’t feel the need to bury your face in a bag of cookies. But after a fight with a loved one or a stressful experience at work, you are less likely to want to try out that new bok choy recipe, and more likely to reach for that candy bar.

When you’re irritable and emotional, there are both physical and psychological changes that are pulling you towards the ‘bad foods’ dark side. (Tip: Drink a full glass of water with squeezed lemon the second you feel the dark force). Physiologically, your body is releasing a stress hormone called cortisol. Cortisol increases your appetite for all things fat and sugary. Psychologically, when you’re in a bad mood, you’re not worried about the long term consequences of inhaling an entire pizza. You say, screw it! And then what? The pizza you just inhaled to make yourself feel better in the interim, now makes you feel worse long after the deed has been done. And the vicious cycle continues.

What’s the key to breaking the bad mood-crap food cycle?? You first need to change your tune and check your ‘tude! Keeping those cortisol levels in check with a healthy attitude is paramount. Don’t let your emotions run you, remember, you are always in control. Because your emotional state has a direct effect on your cortisol levels, it’s vital that you find ways to eliminate stress and shift your focus on being happy and grateful. I bench my cortisol levels and keep my “feel good” chemicals center court by:

  • getting plenty of sleep
  • spending time outdoors (hello sunshine!)
  • staying active
  • laughing a lot
  • listening to music
  • spending time with those I love
  • and finding the silver lining in all my shortcomings

I believe adhering to strict diets and prohibiting yourself from ever indulging, is what can lead to a seriously gluttonous evening, followed by that shameful morning after guilt trip. When we allow ourselves, in moderation, to indulge in the things we love, we don’t need to sound any alarms when we do fall into a Debbie Downer state. I always allow myself to eat what I enjoy…in moderation of course.

Ups and downs will come, but if we can be more mindful, we don’t have to let the blues lead to health issues. Our mood will affect every decision we make, so remember to always check your mood before reaching for your fuel of choice.

A good mood = good food!
